At the base of our health pyramid is nutrition. Sometimes as we work to increase our health, we focus first on decreasing calories and we move more. The classic decrease calories and move more option is a simple trap to later blame for our lack of results. As we move more, we are more hungry and often tempted to snack on junk instead of nurturing ourselves.
Instead, focus on refueling your body after movement through whole foods and raw fruits and veggies. When you need a quick fill that is nutritious, select a shake that is very low in sugar. doTERRA Slim & Sassy TrimShake is a convenient and delicious weight management shake mix that provides essential nutrients and 70 calories per serving. Blended with water or nonfat dairy, almond, rice, or soy milk, TrimShake can be used as part of a weight-loss strategy of reducing daily caloric intake and burning fat stores through exercise. Slim & Sassy TrimShake includes the patented weight-loss ingredient EssentraTrim®†, which research has shown to help manage cortisol—a stress hormone associated with fat storage in the abdomen, hips, and thighs. Slim & Sassy TrimShake also includes Solathin®‡, a special protein extract from natural food sources that supports an increased feeling of satiety. Available in natural chocolate and vanilla flavors, TrimShake blends well with water or milk and provides 8 grams of protein per serving.
It has a very natural flavor. I blend mine with a few other ingredients to increase the protein and healthy fats- further adding to the flavor I like and the filling nature of it. For this one, I added a drop of peppermint essential oil. Not only does it help with digestion, it literally energizes the whole body! Once a week or every other week, I like to whip up some solutions that we can all benefit from. As the state begins to open up and the season is warming up, too, we have a new variety of new circumstances to navigate. This means, we want to be armed with oils that will assist us on multiple levels- health, emotions and prevention.
I love that for short money, you can order a little key chain to carry around your favorite oils and blends. Don't be intimidated, these blends are very simple to make!
For our top priorities, I made an allergy roller (since all but Patty has them in my house). It consists of 2drops lemon, 2 lavender, 1 peppermint (I don't like so much directly on the skin and it's potent) per 2tsp of fractionated coconut oil. If we decide to go for a hike or the boys are out playing baseball, we will use this before the allergies start by rolling a tiny bit at the temples (make sure you are wearing a hat or sunblock as citrus oils are photosensitive) and just below the nose.
The second bottle is an anti-stress roller. The truth is... the boys and I are not used to being out and about with other people anymore. For my oldest, with asthma, he is particularly nervous about being near people- mask or not. Many of us are in this boat. Adaptiv is an amazing mood stabilizing blend that has been proven through research to support the mood, decrease the worry and increase the focus in people. I love to diffuse it, but you can also roll it down the insides of the forearms, at the nape of the neck and pulse points. Roll it on the palms and inhale it for a few minutes for instant benefits. I diluted with fractionated coconut oil, again.
Bugs are annoying. I love bugs from afar. They buzz around, they have wings (truthfully something I always wanted as a kid), the pollinate our plants (thank you!) but, no one wants bugs biting, infecting, stinging or crawling on them. Especially not ticks. I did some research to select oils that are also ok for pets (there is a great site you can access backed by a number of reputable vets for more on this)https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/essential-oils-for-dogs/. Check out their "About me Page". We won't roll the roller ball on our new puppy, but we could roll it on ourselves, especially around our ankles. We can will roll it on the edges of the fabric blanket that we put our pup on to romp around with less tics crawling onto. I used Terrashield, cederwood, lemongrass and peppermint. Of course, this is also significantly dilluted with fractionated coconut oil. Lemongrass is not a citrus despite it's name... so it shouldn't impact or cause burns.
Immunity and Cleansing Support: OnGuard is dilluted in the last roller. It has great benefits for supporting and protecting the immune system. After cleaning our dirty hands, we can roll this on to offer additional cleansing and protection. It also smells heavenly. So, after visiting a public trail or a stop at the local nursery, we will be prepared to ensure we aren't taking too many squiggly little germs with us. Again, dilute with fractionated coconut oil to support these aromatic compounds as the enter the skin and travel where we want them- rather than dissolving into the atmosphere.

It was Kadence's idea. He was encouraged to create a recycled creature for art class. In about two minutes, me made a cat out of an empty milk carton, a paper towel roll and he used a sharpie to color on the eyes and the nose. To say he was un-invested is fair. He had other ideas. He wanted to use the soft felt squares to make something cuddly. So, we created a pattern on the fabric, cut it out and went through the sewing kit my mom gave me. It has a few odds and ends from my grandma and it's our family belief that those we've loved and lost somehow enchant our items from afar so they'll bring us luck. My grandpa's hoe helped me bring green plants to the earth when we lived in Freeville, a small town in Upstate New York.
Now, it was Grandma Great's turn. We used her buttons for eyes and a nose and sewed with her thread. In a few hours, we took turns stitching sometimes neatly, sometimes in haste and bunches and loose threads and extra knots. Who cares about perfection, this was going to be a caring Koala.
Our cupboards contained a very overpriced mix of wild rice (planned already for a dinner this week) so a phone call and a couple of hours later, Patty arrived with the good old fashioned $1.00 bag of rice. We filled up our buddy and Petey placed drops of his favorite essential oils in the top (lavender, copaiba, wild orange, lemon and lime). I would recommend that you use only a tiny bit of citrus in yours or stick to lavender, serenity or other soothing oils like Balance as citrus oils can be strong for snuggling with bare skin at night. We stitched up the top of his sweet little head and patched up the hole we discovered in his little koala arm pit.
The oils quickly penetrated and filled our new little snuggly with goodness. The uplifting and cleansing smells of pure citrus mixed with the calming and soothing smells of lavender and copaiba. Petey couldn't be happier.
At bedtime, we snuggled up and Petey led me in a meditation. If you missed the story, check out the article by clicking on the link above.
Simple projects are enhanced by the oils that smell great, impact our olfactory nerve and immediately allow for stress relief as the limbic system kicks into action. Petey even researched the medicinal benefits of his oils.
I fell asleep overwhelmed by the gift of being a mother to a caring little boy and the realization that these oils have healed us enough to make an impact on his strategies for dealing with stress. You can easily make your own little buddy with minimal supplies and our amazing oils.
As we were preparing the diffuser last night, Petey got inspired. He loves this practice in our home. He said, "Mama, I want to mix something up with the oils!" Petey's Summer Comfort blend smells sooo good, like a summer breeze. The citrus is fresh and cleans the air, the copaiba is comforting and anti-inflammatory, soothing to the nervous system. Lavender is a classic, grounding and soft scent.
One of the coolest parts, Petey immediately started researching the medical benefits of the oils and wanted to know how they work together. He said, "I know it smells good, but, I also want to know how it helps people." That just the ticket. That's the gold. Unlike candles or perfumes or air fresheners with chemicals that put toxins in the air, these oils make the house smell amazing AND they have health benefits.
At 9 years old, he has already experienced enough of these benefits to know this.
Some people can't believe the benefits of essential oils and others understand that aside from being free from addictions and super helpful, they also have side BENEFITs. These babies are powerful and multipurpose.

At bedtime, the first thing we do in our house is prepare the bath and the diffuser. Sleep routines are so important to the health of our families. Right now, it's really hard to wind down our brains... so having a plan at bedtime when you might be frazzled is a good thing.
We used to say, "It's time for the four Bs: Bath, Brush Your Teeth, Books and Bed." We have far better results now that we have essential oils on hand in our house.
We didn't throw out the routines, we enhanced it. What goes in the bath? I make a huge batch of Epsom salts mixed with fractionated coconut oil, baking soda and essential oils. It makes the water so soft and fragrant. If you have sore muscles, lemongrass, eucalyptus and copaiba will help you breathe, cleanse and relieve the pain. For sleep, add some serenity. Your skin won't even need lotion afterward.
As the bath runs, we fill the diffuser and dim the lights in the boy's rooms. In the diffuser.. PK has allergies and I have found that using lemon, lavender and peppermint at night has helped him avoid the Ceterizine and Benadryl plus the two different inhalers he usually needs. Petey loves any combination of lavender, serenity, frankincense, vetiver, Onguard and Breathe or eucalyptus.
We roll serenity, balance or vetiver on the feet or up and down our spines after the bath to ground us and help us relax. Rollers are easy to make by combining fractionated coconut oil or another choice oil with your favorite oils.
I've been using Serenity gel caps and an Adaptiv gel caps to support restful sleep for myself and PK and Patty like Copaiba to help them doze off.
There are so many good options that are natural and addiction free- all effective in helping to support rest- if you're struggling, let me know and we can customize a plan for you!
